Lino Workshops

Lino cutting tools on a work bench with ink rollers

Come and join me for a fun, relaxing lino workshop in a small group of 4 in my home and studio in Maidenhead, Berkshire. No art background or printmaking experience is needed.

This is an introductory lino workshop on paper, aimed at the absolute beginner, or those who might have dabbled at school and forgotten it all! The group is kept small so that I can help you as much as you need.

You never know, maybe you’ll catch the lino printing bug like me!

What does the day involve?

The morning…

We will start the day by looking at an overview of lino printing and practise simple carving techniques and mark making together on a scrap piece of lino (I use the traditional grey lino as it cuts easily, I love it). This part will be at my kitchen table.

You will then plan a print from a drawing or photo of your choice (you can trace this if you’re not confident drawing from scratch). Then we’ll transfer your design onto lino.

We’ll talk about which bits to carve away and which bits to print (sometimes the hardest part to get your head around!)

Following all that tuition you can sit and enjoy a relaxing couple of hours carving your block (with some nice chilled music, a hot drink and biscuits of course!)

After lunch…

After a short break for a packed lunch we’ll get to the messy, fun bit, printing in my garden studio! All by hand, the old fashioned way (with inks, rollers and the back of a wooden spoon or a burnishing tool).

You will come away with up to five prints (depending how speedily you work!) to frame or gift as a card perhaps.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are complimentary, but please bring a packed lunch

All materials, equipment, paper and inks are provided.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • An apron (or an old shirt will do)
  • A drawing or photo measuring 15 x 15cm that you would like to work from. Any theme goes: landscapes, portraits, botanical themes, still life, pet portraits: you can print whatever you would like to have on your wall at home!
  • Packed lunch

Lino workshop cost: £85 per person.

Or let me know if you would like to book a group on a different date.

PLEASE NOTE – workshops require a minimum of three participants to go ahead. I will inform you ahead of time if this is the case and arrange for you to attend a different date.

Reviews

“My friends and I recently attended Julie’s Lino printing course. We had a great day, planning and carving our designs in the morning and printing in the afternoon. Julie is a great teacher and had loads of good tips and encouragement for us. We came away with our prints and lots of ideas to try. A really lovely day with lots of chat, tea and snacks too. Highly recommended!”

“I recently attended an ‘introduction to lino printing’ workshop with Julie. I learnt an awful lot and had such a super day. Would highly recommend to others thinking about adding to their artistic skills. Julie is a very talented artist who also has great taste in music!”

“Thank you for a lovely relaxing day, you are a great teacher. After today I feel inspired to give the Lino printing another go , you have armed me with all the tools to go ahead. Thank you for the treats too!”
