About Me

Julie Gardner standing in her printmaking studio in her garden

I discovered printmaking a few years ago, and fell in love with the meditative process and results of lino printing in particular. It was one of those lightbulb moments. I just love it.

Lino printing goes like this (in a nutshell) – draw, trace, transfer to lino, decide which bits to cut away (these parts won’t have ink on them), cut with various shaped tools, ink, print (on paper which you have prepared in advance). Then perhaps wait a few days for the ink to dry while you cut another piece of lino for a different colour ink.

But it takes a lot longer than saying it! Lino printing is a whole process that takes time and thought and the results are incredible, it’s so satisfying. (Only fellow printmakers will truly understand this obsession of course).

My inspiration

I used to do anything to avoid drawing people, but now my favourite pieces of work always include them (even if they are from the back but I’m getting more brave at drawing faces these days). I feel like they bring the artwork to life somehow and tell a story. I also love nature and being outdoors, and of course pattern. So they all feature in my work too.

Take a look at my latest prints in my shop and get in touch if you would like to discuss any commissions.

My other business

I work part time in a clothing and homewares store in Marlow. I find my time there great for inspiration; seeing and touching beautiful clothes, textiles and accessories. Not to mention the homeware – from pots, mugs and candlesticks to brushes, bedding and the most beautiful handstitched quilts. I really appreciate the hours, skill, and attention to detail taken in making things by hand.

I should mention that I also run a small business making bespoke lampshades – gilhoolie.co.uk. One day I may combine the two but for now that has been my day job for the last 15 years – making lampshades by hand for clients and interior designers (I also run workshops). So you can see, I like to keep busy!
